Science for the People Boston presents:
Science Activism for Social Justice
When: Saturday, May 22nd, 2:00-5:00 pm
Science Activism for Social Justice (SA4SJ) is an interactive workshop to explore the role of scientists in standing up for social justice. We will explore different types of scientific activism and practice useful skills to be active in and out the workplace. We invite participants to demand more from their institutions and the scientific community at large, to critique the role of science in our lives, and work in coalitions with others toward a science dedicated to a common good instead of profit.
Science for the People (SFTP) will host a collective of scientists and activists from: the Union of Concerned Scientists, SEIU Local 509, Physicians for a National Health Plan, Democratic Socialists of America, and Free The Vaccine. The first half of the workshop consists of a panel discussion covering the successes and challenges of activists working in science. The second half will be focused on smaller discussions with skill-based breakout rooms about two types of work: direct actions and organizing in the workplace. We hope that participants will leave the workshop with concrete skills for effective organizing as well as new connections to scientific activism in greater Boston and beyond.
All are welcome to join!
